Fit to programme

This task has been identified by the working groups as part of the agenda behind WP 4.1.

The task number is 062.

Summary

This project seeks opportunities to run internship programs for undergraduate or pre-degree students, typically for 6 weeks over the summer period, focused on large scale compute. A successful internship programme was run in 2026, demonstrating the need for future such programmes, aiming to increase the number of institutions at which these occur. The internships should be fully funded and the students should be treated as members of staff at the hosting institution. Internships should include training in many aspects of large scale accelerated compute, including both user and operations and should perform tasks useful for the hosting HPC facility.

Methodology

Proposals for this project should seek to specify a summer internship programme in large scale compute at a hosting HPC facility, and describe how this will be delivered. Tasks that will be assigned to the interns should be detailed, and training that will be provided should be described. The timescales over which the internship will be active, and the number of interns that can be accepted should be given, along with details of where the internships will be advertised, and for whom the relevant communities are (e.g. Computer Science students, 1st year students, etc). The proposal should pay particular attention to widening access, and how it will ensure that under-represented groups will be supported, in particular groups with historically low participation in this field (including regional considerations).
