Summary
Lattice quantum field theory is the technique used to study, from first principles, the theory describing the strong interaction and related mathematical models with potential applications to beyond the Standard Model physics. It makes intensive use of high-performance computing resources, and has driven the specification of successive generations of massively parallel supercomputers as part of DiRAC—the Tesseract and Tursa extreme scaling services—and has fed significantly into the design process for the Next National Supercomputing Service.
Grid (https://github.com/paboyle/Grid) and HiRep (https://github.com/claudiopica/HiRep) are two widely-used community codes in this field. Both have received significant attention from Research Software Engineers in accelerating portions of them. This work will assess the performance of benchmarks derived from each of these codes and assess how much scope there may be for further acceleration, deploying the SHAREing performance assessment methodology developed at Durham.
